Class Wrap-up Paper

-Before I took this class I had absolutely no idea what concentration I wanted to do. I actually decided to do business as a major just a few months before school started so I was not thinking about a concentration.

-Now that I have taken BUS100 I have a better idea about what concentration(s) I may choose. The three I am most excited about are management, finance, and CIS. The most surprising of those three is definitely CIS as a concentration because I never thought I would consider doing that. But after a very entertaining and convincing presentation by Teri Butler I realized how valuable it could be to know so much about computers. With technology in this time period, it may be very easy to get a job with a CIS concentration. Management and Finance also caught my attention and I feel like there are so many things you can do with those concentrations. My Dad was a politics major but he now works in the insurance business and I feel a degree in Business finance would be very useful if I want to follow in his footsteps.

-I haven't necessarily changed my mind about a concentration because I didn't really have an idea what I wanted to do when I started.

-To be honest I wasn't really worried about choosing a concentration at the beginning of the semester or now because I know any business degree will be good to get a job no matter what concentration. But I definitely don't think I will declare my concentration at least for the rest of the year because I haven't taken any business classes besides BUS100 and BUS150. Once I get into more business classes I'm sure I will think about declaring a concentration.

-The speakers were helpful overall in the information. I liked when they talked about a typical day in their job and how often they work. Some are very busy and always traveling. Others have a lot of free time and can work from home. The one thing that didn't help was almost every speaker spoke about all the same jobs you can have with different concentrations.

-I am very happy I decided to be a business major overall. It may not be the easiest or most fun major but when it comes to my future I know I will benefit from it.

-I would definitely feel comfortable meeting with a Career Advisor whether it was for the Career Center or the COB. They are very nice from my few experiences and seem to be very helpful. If I could find out what careers I am interested in that could help me decide a concentration.

-The most useful information I received from the class was probably the days the current COB students and former students came in. They new exactly where we were coming from and it was nice to know how they go about getting jobs and internships.

Business Publications Assignment #3- The Economist

http://www.economist.com/businessfinance/displayStory.cfm?story_id=14563644
The swine-flu pandemic is likely to infect 40% of the population and maybe more. Because of this, people are panicking and are trying to get vaccinations for the swine flu and anything else they can get. The US has said to spend 6.6 billion for vaccines from Belgium. In the past vaccines have been relatively cheap but due to technology and economics, some shots will be 100 dollars or more. Scientists say one vaccination can prevent multiple diseases that would be very expensive to cure. As scientists develop more and more is should slowly get less expensive, but for now vaccines are not cheap like they used to be.

Business Publications Assignment #3- Business Week

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/blog/eyeonasia/archives/2009/10/toshiba_puts_ce.html

Technology is quite amazing in this day in age and even growing up with most of it, I am still impressed by the improvements they are making. Toshiba recently created a new 55-inch TV with a Cell multimedia chip. This TV is extremely fast and is the future of TVs. It will be able to let people watch 8 channels at once, surf the Internet, record 26 hours of video, and much more. The one problem is Toshiba is putting this TV on the market for 11,000 dollars, which is very over priced. Many competitors out there have almost the same TV with a few less features priced at 1,000 dollars. If you ask me, the TV is cool, but definitely not worth the cash.

-Syracuse summers tend to be in the 70s.
http://www.idcide.com/weather/ny/syracuse.htm
-Syracuse spends 8,000 dollars per student and there is 13 kids per teacher which means there public schools care a lot about its students and fit my criteria.
http://www.bestplaces.net/city/Syracuse-New_York.aspx
-The median cost of homes in Syracuse is 93,000. This can be good and bad. It seems affordable but this may mean a lot of people are living in small homes and may not be good for a family.

5.) Rolling Stone is extremely difficult to apply for a job online. I went over their entire website as well as other jobs and found nothing even close to my concentration.
http://www.rollingstone.com/

When looking for jobs I found out it definitely matters the size of the company and how well the business is doing. With major companies like Nike and ESPN there is a mass amount of jobs and the job descriptions are very detailed. The variety of jobs ranges from requirements of a high school diploma to a Masters degree and 10+ years of experience. Both Nike and ESPN seemed to have the most intriguing jobs but they will be very hard to get. The other three companies surprisingly did not have as many job openings and the jobs did not seem very exciting. The job descriptions were still very detailed but did not interest me as much. Before applying for a job, I found out it is a necessity to look at the job description and requirements.

Career Exploration

-The concentration I am most interested in right now is business management.
-3 possible careers I could have with this concentration are Sales Management, Commercial Banking, and Production Management.

Sales Management: http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/41-1011.00
1.) In Sales Management the average person needs to provide customer service by greeting customers and responding to questions and complaints. You also would need to assign employees to specific duties, supervise employees, keep records of purchases and sales, enforce safety and health rules, hire and train employees and much more.
2.) The education in most Sales Management is an associate's or bachelor's degree. However, depending on the company, many may only require a high-school diploma. Job training can take anywhere from a few months to a year.
3.) The employment outlook for this career for the next 5-10 years is slower than average at about 3%-6%. There are not many factors that will affect the demand for this career as long as business keep opening and the economy is functioning.
4.) The average starting salary is $35,000 annually.
5.) Three things that concern me about this occupation are...
- Some companies only require a high school diploma. I am planning on having a bachelor's degree in business from the prestigious Colorado State University.
-The employment is slower than average.
-The salary is not as high as other managing jobs.

Commercial Banking: Financial Manager http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/11-3031.02
1.) When working in Commercial Banking you establish relationships with customers, examine and evaluate loan applications, oversee the flow of cash and financial instruments, recruit staff members, network within communities to attract new businesses, establish procedures, review collection reports to determine the status of collections, and much more.
2.) Financial Managers are required to a have a four year bachelor's degree. They usually need several years of job experience as well as on-the-job training.
3.) The growth is form 7%-13% in the next 5-10 years which is fairly average and during a recession this career could decrease in demand.
4.) The average annual starting salary is $99,000.
5.) Three things that concern me about this occupation are...
- Job security and possible firing during a recession.
- Too much responsibility; one mistake can mess up a lot.
- Dealing with upset customers and employees too often.

Production Management: http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/51-1011.00
1.) Some things you might do in Production Management are enforcing safety and sanitation regulations, direct and coordinate activities of employees, read and analyze charts, plan and establish work schedules, inspect materials and products, demonstrate equipment operations, interpret blueprints, job orders, and much more.
2.) Most people in Production Management are not required to have a Bachelor's degree but vocational schools or Associate's degrees are usually required. Usually one to two years of training is required for this profession.
3.) The employment outlook for Production Management is not looking good; -3% to -9% in the next 5-10 years. It is declining slowly and most likely due to one person managing multiple companies.
4.) The average starting salary for Production Management is $50,400 annual.
5.) Three things that concern me about this occupation are...
- Getting a job in the first place. The growth is declining and may not be a good field to go in to.
- Enforcing safety and sanitation regulations does not seem like something I would want to do.
- I am not exactly sure how to interpret most blueprints and that could be difficult.

Business Publication Assignment #2- Denver Post

http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_13434425

Shopping during the holidays is something everyone knows about, but what about hiring extra workers during this time? The Denver Post had a recent article about hiring’s during the holidays being cut back. Forty percent of retailers are planning on cutting back there hiring’s this Christmas, Hanukah, etc… season. They are not expecting as many sales this year nor are they ordering as much inventory. This article was interesting because I usually do not think about people trying to get jobs during the holidays. I always think about all the spending but many people need to earn more to do any spending at all. I hope people who are truly in need of a job this winter break can find one.

Business Publication Assignment #2- The Australlian

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,26079523-5018019,00.html

As a coffee drinker myself, I have never been a fan of Starbucks and its over-priced mediocre coffee. The article I read from the Australian explains that Starbucks has been facing a large drop in sales and has been closing hundreds of stores. McDonald’s has a billboard that says, “Four bucks is dumb,” mocking Starbucks’ high prices causing it to loose some of its consumers. However, after cutting back costs, firing employees, and closing stores, Starbucks is back on top and their shares have doubled this year. I found this article interesting because I wasn’t exactly sure how a major corporation like Starbucks works and how they can recover just by closing stores.

Career Fair Assignment

-The two companies I visited at the career fair were Verizon Wireless and Kohl's.

-The two questions I asked were...
1.)What kind of internships do you offer and what are the qualifications you need to apply?
2.) What is the best part of your job and working for your company?
The responses I got from Verizon Wireless were...
1.) Yes, we offer internships every summer that go from the beginning of June until early August. We begin reviewing applications in March and April and will decide who will get the internships a few weeks later. The only requirement is you must be a full time college student and have good grades.
2.) The best part of my job is working in Human Resources and getting to support all our employees from beginning to end. I get to watch them develop from the first day being very nervous to a few years later managing stores and being very professional in their career.
The responses I got from Kohl's were...
1.) Yes we offer 2 internships. One is a 10 week program from Jun 7th-Aug 14th, 2010. The other is a 15 week internship from Aug-Oct of 2010. You must be anticipating graduation in 2010 or 2011 and be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field. You also must have strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.

-The hardest part about attending the Career Fair was choosing who to talk to and how to go about it. Almost all of the people were very friendly and open to talking but it takes a bit of courage to walk up and introduce yourself.
- If I could do anything differently next time I go to the career fair it would be dressing nicer, and preparing a better resume.
-All of the recruiters recommended getting internships during college while still keeping up with school work and I took this advice very seriously.

Business Publication Assignment #1-BBC News

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8256412.stm

Another article I read was titled "Japan Airlines to cut 6,800 Job" about a Japanese airline company firing many of its employees. The airline was suffering greatly with profit and was looking to become better fuel-efficient and focus more on business customers. Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and Air France are all looking to invest in Japan Airlines and to expand to Asia. The rest of the article explanied that the International Air Transport Association is increasing its expected losses from 9 billion to 11 billion. This article was interesting to me because in the recession we are experiencing in the US, I rarely think about foreign countries and the impact the recession has around the world. When US air travel decreases, it seems that all over the world it decreeses causing job losses not only in the US but places like Japan as well.

Business Publication Assignment #1-Forbes

http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/14/multitouch-screens-enterprise-technology-cio-network-intelligence.html

The article I read was called The Death Of Business Intelligence, written by Dan Woods. This article was made to inform businessmen and entrepreneurs about the rapid increase in technology and the new and improved multi-touch screens. These screens are very expensive and not many businesses can afford them yet. Woods spoke of CNN anchor John King and how he used these screens while revolutionizing the way presentations and politics talk shows are made. During the 2008 presidential elections I remember watching Mr. King maneuver these screens and provide instant answers about the current polls. Most businesses are still recording data over months at a time and looking information up through websites and other sources. With these multi-touch screens, information can be found immediately and someone like John Woods can do an entire politics presentation without any help backstage. This article was very interesting especially because I remember watching John King do this during the Obama-Mccain election. Forbes.com was very helpful and a great site to find business articles.

My WHY factor

I'm at college, I go to class, and I make friends but WHY am I doing this? To start, I go to college because of my future and getting a decent job is going to be a lot easier with a college degree, unless I want to work at McDonalds. Why do I do all my work and go to class? I have always been pretty good in school and can motivate myself to try hard and get good grades. I know I will need good grades if I am going to go to a graduate school or during a job interview if they need to look at my resume. I hate to do bad in school and it makes me feel stressed and unhappy when I don't get my work done. I always feel better when I can go out at night knowing I finished all my schoolwork. Another reason for college is the lifelong friendships I will make and the students and teachers who will change my life. College isn't always just about school and I love meeting new people.

Dream Locations

5 factors for choosing a location to work...

1.) Population between 100 thousand and 2 million.
2.) Relatively cold winters with an average temperature below 55.
3.) Mild Summers with weather temperatures in the 80s.
4.) Good public school system.
5.) Suburbs with a yard for raising a family. (Not in the city)

Part II Business Concentrations

1.

Choosing a concentration in the school of business will be tough for me because I think all of them are possibilities. To start out, I do pretty well in math and don't have a problem with numbers or calculations. I also like economics and I believe economics and business have a lot in common. I passed both AP calculus and AP macro/micro economics so that should give me a bit of a head start in some parts of my business major. I also have very good social skills and think I could make a decent salesman someday. I was student body Vice President in high school and was pretty well liked by my peers, which could come in handy in some business majors. I am not very good at sciences or history, which shouldn't impact my decision on a concentration. I know a decent amount about computers but not enough to pursue a career in it, which could cancel out Computer Information Systems concentration.

2.

Accounting.

I know write of the bat that accountants deal with taxes and sit a computer all day, which does not seem too exciting to me. However people with their own accounting businesses make decent money and could be worth it. I also have heard that you can do multiple careers with an accounting degree and do not necessarily have to be a CPA. I am good with math and numbers so this could be a good concentration for me but it is not my first choice.

Management

Business management is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about a business major. I would love to manage my own business some day and my social skills and math would help however I am not the most organized and probably need to work on that. This concentration is definitely a big interest of mine.

Marketing

Marketing could be cool and I love to see all the different ways in which people can sell a product. One good billboard or one good commercial can change a business forever. Simple products can be sold in mass amounts if you can get good advertising for the write price. I might be interested in marketing but I’m not exactly sure what the classes are like and how my strengths and weaknesses will apply. This concentration is a maybe at the moment.

Computer Information Systems

I'm not exactly sure what a Computer Information Systems concentration does but my computer skills are decent. I like being on the computer and can figure out most problems on my own but I would definitely have to see what this concentration really does. I know most computer programs decently well but would obviously need a lot of work if I were to pursue a career in this concentration.

Finance

Finance could be a really good concentration for me because I have always been good at managing money and big numbers since I was young. I am not too knowledgeable with investments and stocks yet but would definitely like to learn more about them. I'd assume business finance majors could have all different kinds of jobs but I would like to more about the more common places and things they do.

Real Estate

I have never been too interested in real estate and have never pictured myself as a realtor but I do have very good people skills and can build relationships, which could help in selling and buying homes and properties. My parents and their realtor have been trying to sell our house for 2 years now and I understand how a career like this could be frustrating. However one big sell and it could be very exciting and rewarding. I would like to learn a lot more about this concentration to see if it is a possibility as my concentration.

After taking both the quizzes I feel that my results matched my personality but the wide range of jobs didn’t help me too much with a future career. The Princeton review Quiz described me pretty well as face paced, logical, friendly, authoritative, and personal. I do feel as though I can convince people and be a decent salesman someday. The quizzes did help narrow my concentration a little bit and I think management or marketing could be my two I am most fit for. I will have to wait and see but these quizzes did help me a bit.

Part I About ME, Charlie Fredrick

-Charlie Fredrick

-I'm from Colorado Springs, CO.

-I live in Corbett, best dorm by far.

-I am taking 6 classes, 14 credit hours.

-I am not working this semester, but will definitely be working once I get the hang of college and my classes.

-CSU was an easy choice for me because I only applied to CU and CSU. I love Colorado too much to leave and being the youngest of four kids I knew my parents would like if they only had to pay in-state tuition for me. Boulder was a very nice campus but ultimately my decision was based on the people I met and their attitudes. People in Boulder did not seem as friendly as the ones I met in Fort Collins. Everyone here seemed friendly and I loved the campus so I decided on it and I love it so far.

-Choosing business as my major was not necessarily because I knew I wanted to own/create a business but rather it is a useful major and I will be able to find a job after graduating. I do not enjoy sciences and I feel I have good social skills and like to do math. Having a business degree does not force you to do one thing but you can work for all different kinds of companies.

- During my free time I enjoy playing lacrosse, watching sports, and listening to all kinds of music and contributing to me already very large itunes library.

-I don't know a single girl in this class but I am hoping to get to know some of the good-looking girls, which there seem to be plenty.

-I have not met any faculty members either but I'm sure I will soon.

-I am very interested in study abroad however I don't speak a foreign language and that would exclude quite a few countries.

-Publications...

-Business Week, heard of it but don't read it.

-Fortune, heard of it but don't read it.

-Forbes, read it before but not often

-The Economist, heard of it but don't read it

-BBC, heard of it but don't read it.

- Denver Post, occasionally read it but not too often

-Forbes Small Business, have heard of it but don't read it

-Wall Street Journal, Read it before but not often

-I have plenty of questions about choosing my concentration and the CSU COB but hopefully most will be answered during BUS 100.
